Akona Ndungane is a former Springbok rugby player, 2007 Rugby World Cup winner and inspirational speaker whose remarkable sporting journey is a story of perseverance, resilience, teamwork and overcoming adversity.
Born in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, Akona’s career took him from the Mighty Elephants and Border Bulldogs to the Blue Bulls and Bulls, where he became one of the franchise’s most respected and consistent players.
Akona represented the Springboks in 11 Test matches between 2006 and 2007 and was selected for South Africa’s victorious 2007 Rugby World Cup squad, playing in the tournament as the Springboks went on to lift the Webb Ellis Cup.
His career with the Bulls spanned more than a decade and included over 100 Super Rugby appearances. He became known not only for his ability on the field but for his determination to return from significant injuries, including two broken legs and a broken hand.
