Abey Mokgwatsane is the Managing Executive of Brand, Sponsorship and Communications at Vodacom, overseeing the brand across South Africa and consulting to the Lesotho, Mozambique, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo markets.
Mokgwatsane’s journey began as a marketing trainee at the brand experience company, the VWV Group, he then went onto join SAB as brand manager of Castle Loud, a young adult multi-media property for Castle Lager. In 2003, he was appointed Brand Group Manager of Miller Genuine Draft and was tasked with launching the brand into the South African market.
5 years after joining SAB, Mokgwatsane found himself back where he started at VWV, where he and his partners bought a majority stake in the company. The bottom line performance of the company increased 10-fold with a notable highlight being the production of the opening and closing ceremonies of the FIFA 2010 World Cup. He was appointed CEO of Ogilvy & Mather South Africa, in January 2012 where he led the digital transformation of the company through the acquisition of Gloo Digital and maintained the creative pedigree of the agency winning a record 3 Cannes Grand Prixs to stay the most creative agency in South Africa for 5 years in a row.
Mokgwatsane has been nominated one of South Africa’s Mail & Guardian top 200 young leaders, was GQ’s 2013 Best Dressed Man, Destiny Man’s 2017 top 40 under 40, a member of the Vodacom Foundation Board and was recently recognised as one of the top 100 in-house communicators in the world by PRovoke Media, a global PR news and Insights organisation.
He is a Purpose evangelist, a 2019 Iron Man Finisher and Kyan’s Dad.
