The name Abavuki, derived from isiXhosa, means “Wake up, early birds!” — a fitting reflection of the band’s energetic spirit, uplifting musical philosophy and passion for bringing people together through music.
Blending traditional African musical heritage with contemporary influences, Abavuki has created a unique and instantly recognisable sound. Abavuki has also entertained exceptionally large audiences, including a performance for approximately 80,000 people at Cape Town’s Festive Lights Switch-On in 2022.
Their recording career reflects their musical development and international experience, with six albums released since their formation. These include African Rhythms, Live in China, Africa Got Soul, Decade, One Summer in Europe and their sixth album, The Right Key, released in November 2024.
In 2015, Abavuki received the IMEXSA Export of the Year Award, recognising their contribution to taking South African music to international audiences.
The band’s achievements also include being featured in a BBC Four documentary with musician Midge Ure, as well as being commissioned to record Africa Got Soul in celebration of Motown’s 50th anniversary.
