Somizi Mhlongo has been in the entertainment business for almost 30 years. His career began when he was 13 years old – he joined the broadway musical Sarafina! and travelled the world for 5 years with the production. He later went on to star in the film adaptation of Sarafina!, which also became the first big project he choreographed. As a young star he later featured in other acclaimed movies such as Cry, The Beloved Country.
The dynamic “SomGaGa”, as he is affectionately known to his allegiance of supporters, was born into Mzansi show biz. He is the son of the acclaimed late actor/comedian Ndaba Mhlongo and veteran actress Mary Twala.
Somizi has rooted himself as a vanguard of the South African entertainment industry. He wears his proverbial badge of honour for his many years of experience in the industry. He is also the go-to choreographer and host for live events and music video productions. His illustrious résumé includes hosting the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and the red carpet at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) in 2016. He was the lead choreographer for Miss South Africa from 1998-2008 and then again in 2015. He had his own show on Cliff Central. Somizi “Mr Whoo Shem” is also the ambassador for Department of Water and Sanitation and DSTV compact.
