Based: Cape Town
The Langa Choral Society was established in 1981 as a Choral Music Organisation that continues to exist regardless of the changes in membership. The choir is one of the oldest groups in the Western Cape and the founder member of the West Cape Choral Music association.
The choir has participated in numerous musical competitions and festivals locally and nationally. The Grahamstown National Arts Foundation invited them a few years ago to participate in the annual (Standard Bank) National Arts Festival. The group has planned and organised national tours for its different productions.
The choir educates and trains its own members in the development of choral music by introducing them to theory and practical music.
Recently the choir has been joined by a high contingency of young members from different communities and schools. These members joined the choir specifically because of its music-training programme that produces high standards and good quality music in some national competitions and festivals.
The most recent functions they have done include repeated functions for Wedgewood SA, Western Cape Schools Network, Hello Africa, Safmarine, Dragonfly Africa, Siemens and others. This choral society also performs at many community and charity functions. Guests frequently join in on the familiar songs they sing and tap their feet to the rhythm.
Langa Choral Society recently won the Old Mutual/Telkom choir festival in Cape Town in the 40 – 60 piece group. They are currently in Port Elizabeth singing against other top choirs in South Africa.
