Gauteng Opera is an all-round performing arts and entertainment company focussing on opera related productions, concerts and events. With the slogan “Opera for Everyone”, Gauteng Opera aims to expose opera to varied audiences with different vocal offerings. The artists of Gauteng Opera always strive to challenge the conventions of art and not to be confined to the traditional operatic repertoire. Their inspiration encompasses all genres that ignite their passion.
Gauteng Opera singers along with guest artists have performed with the Free State Symphony Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Gauteng Opera Orchestra in various concerts. They have also performed with South African singer, Nianell and are involved in Community work with schools and charities.
Recent performances include Gauteng Opera’s One Voice: An African Celebration and Forté in Concert, with musical arrangements by Eddie Clayton. Both these concerts were received with enthusiasm. These soloists from Gauteng Opera performed in the concert version of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata in June 2015, with Phenye singing the role of “Alfredo” (the male lead), to great critical acclaim. This talented ensemble has a vast repertoire and performs an infinite range of genres in music. During 2014 they were part of the well-loved Mozart opera, Cosi fan Tutte and during August 2015, all starred in three short South African operas, performed under the banner, Cula Mzansi which was restaged during June 2016 in Pretoria. Another accolade for Gauteng Opera was the new production of Donizetti’s comic opera, L’elisir d’amore, which was stage at the Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg during August. Early 2017, Gauteng Opera was also represented at the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival. The singers regularly perform at corporate events and dinner concerts as well.
