Dubmasta China (also known as MC Raggasouljah – as a vocalist; and performing with DJ Invizable as Dubmasta China) started out as a professional deejay in 1989 while studying at The University of Cape Town. From then on he started playing regular gigs for the Reggae Appreciation Society at UCT. Also started playing at small private functions. He was also already a performing spoken word artist since 1988. His career as a Ragga mc took off in 1992 when he started free styling with The Streaks, a two-tone ska band which included members like Josh Hawks – currently bassist for Freshly Ground. His club deejay career  started out at Ruby In The Dust, a small live music venue in Observatory (Cape Town) around 1994 and became resident deejay at The Ruby Temple of Music in Salt River (The Temple of Music was a bigger venue run by the owners of Ruby In The Dust) where he played until February 1995.

1989: First dj gig at UCT in March 1989; First ever Reggae party at UCT.

1992: First freestyle mc gig at Ruby in the Dust with The Streaks.

1993: Did regular mc sessions with The Zap Dragons at Ruby in the Dust; also performed with The Reggae Project in the same year.

1994: Started club deejay career at Ruby in the Dust and The Ruby Temple of Music respectively. Resident dj at The Temple of Music.

1995: Resident reggae deejay at The Fringe. Freelance percussionist with Adamu & Friends.

1996: Percussionist for the band Backroom Jungle and more gigs with Adamu & Friends.

1997: Formed the group Firing Squad with Grenville Williams (bass) and Brent Geduld (vocals). Other members included Werner van Staden (original guitarist), Jerome Reynard (drums), Riccardo Moretti (original keyboardist), James Reynard (guitar), Farrell Adams (vocals & percussion) and Sebastian Voigt (keyboards). Performed at Oppikoppi Festival with the rock group Nine.

1999: Performed at Oppikoppie with Firing Squad and Nine.

2000: Firing Squad Tour (Beaufort West (Sports Café), Bloemfontein (Mystic Boer), Johannesburg (Club 206), Pretoria (Tings an’ Times), Oppikoppie Easter Festival, Rustenburg (Reggae Festival on the Farm). Performed at Grahamstown National Arts Festival with Firing Squad, as well as the Oppikoppie Festival in Worcester.

2001: Last Oppikoppie gig with Firing Squad before the band split up.

2003: Percussionist for Godessa. Played the HipHop Oppikoppie gig in Pretoria. Also played Mecufe Arts Festival in Bloemfontein, as well as The North Sea Jazz Festival, in Cape Town.

2004: Played with Godessa at The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in Oudtshoorn. In October 2004 played at The Flanders Film Festival in Gent, Belgium with Godessa.

2005: Toured the south of Finland as percussionist with Teba the Original Social Worker in July 2005, and played two gigs in Finland in December of the same year.

2006: Played first dj gig at Le Quartier in Gent, Belgium (May 2006) alongside the Pirates Crew and Fi Jah Music Crew. Performed at Music May Day Festival in Amsterdam, Holland (May 2006) as percussionist for Blaq Pearl.

2007: Second dj gig at Le Quartier in Gent, Belgium (18 May 2007) alongside Bomba Sound (Antwerpen) and NSG Sound (Gent). Dj gig at the second Rocking The Daisies Festival. Dj gig at the Bomvu Rock Festival in Coffee Bay.

2008: Dj gig at Sowing The Seeds Festival in Hout Bay. Dj gig at the third Rocking The Daisies Festival. Dj gig at the Bomvu Red Skei Festival in Coffee Bay, Eastern Cape for the New Year celebrations.

2009: Performing with Teba as support act for Linton Kwesi Johnson and The Dub Band on May 1 2009. Dj at the Billabong Surfing Competition in Jeffrey’s Bay. Dj at main stage – Rocking The Daisies Festival. Played percussion with EJ von Lyrik & The Champions at Rocking The Daisies.

2010: Toured Europe from June to August with EJ von Lyrik & The Champions. Deejay gigs in The Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Denmark. Deejay gig at Rocking The Daisies Festival – main stage.

2011: Tour of Europe (The Netherlands, Germany & Switzerland) and Reunion Islands (Sakifo Festival).

2013: Toured Reunion Islands again.

2014: Only deejay for the UB40 concert at Val De Vie Estate in Paarl, 4 April 2014. Played sets before and after UB40.

2015: New Year’s Day set with DJ Invizable at the Smoking Dragon Festival. Jan 2015 percussion set at the final Gazelle gigs Assembly in Cape Town and Park Acoustics in Pretoria.

2015: In May 2015 – Smoking Dragon Adrenalin Festival in Drakensberg deejay set and percussion with DJ Invizable & Champions of the Sonarverse. Percussion set at Bushfire Festival with DJ Invizable.

2015: Record-breaking 11 Hour dj set at Pitch Festival, Amsterdam July 2015 and a set at Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week.

2015: Rocking the Daisies Festival with DJ Invizable and Niskerone, October 2015.

2016: 1 & 2 July 6 hour dj sets at Pitch Festival, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

2016: 23 July De Leuke Festival, Utrecht, The Netherlands with KD Soundsystem.

2016: 16 July Afro-Latino Festival, Belgium with KD Soundsystem.

2016: 28, 29 & 30 July Festival le Escales, St Nazaire, France.

2016: 7 October, Rocking The Daisies Festival with DJ Invizable.

2016: 31 December, Smoking Dragon Festival, Amphitheatre Backpackers, Drakensberg.

2017: 28 January – The Sun International Met at the Kenilworth Racecourse. Also played the Littlegig Festival at Wiesenhof, Stellenbosch.

2017: 10 February – Percussionist with DJ Invizable at the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival, City Hall, Cape Town.

2017: 26 March – Sizzled Summer Block Party, Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town. Percussion with  Invizable.

2017: 1 July – joined MuthaFM as a radio deejay with my own Reggae/Dancehall show called Word Sound & Power, every Monday from 12-3pm ZA time.

2017: 17 & 18 August – Dank Parties in Johannesburg and Pretoria – Percussion with DJ Invizable.

2017: 16 September – Opening of Zeitz Mocca Museum of African Contemporary Art – Percussion with DJ Invizable.

2017: 26 December – Sizzled Summer Festival, Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town. Percussion with deejays Fistaz Maxwell and Glen Lewis.

2017: 30 December – Vic Falls Carnival, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. One hour solo dj set and one hour percussion set with DJ Invizable.
