Talented, driven, gracious and alluring are just some of the words used to describe South African born singer songwriter, Cara Frew.
Cara is taking the SA music industry by storm with her enthralling Pop vocals over African influenced beats. She is a dedicated musician who spends most of her time creating, developing and producing. At 18 years of age, having studied at the Malie Kelly Vocal Academy in South Africa, this passionate muso ventured to the City of Angels to follow her dream and enrolled at the Song Writing School of Los Angeles to develop her musical talent further.
During her time in LA she gained first-hand experience working in the studio with top writers and producers, including Lauren Christy and Andre Lindal, the creative duo behind Kelly Clarkson’s Grammy Award-winning ‘Stronger’. Listing Amy Winehouse and Lana Del Rey as some of her favourite artists, it was a dream come true to record a four-track EP with Daniel Heath who was responsible for Del Rey’s ‘Blue jeans’ and ‘Young and Beautiful’ and co-write with Stefan Skarbek, who worked closely with Winehouse. Cara entitled this EP ‘Come Close To Me’ and on the day of it’s release, in April, it became a featured EP on iTunes and was praised under iTunes Mzansi hits.
Back home in South Africa, Cara collaborated with one of Africa’s biggest exports, world-renowned DJ and music producer – Black Coffee. ‘I’ll Find You’ was the first release off Black Coffee’s 2015 album. The feature afforded Cara the opportunity to perform at Sonar Music Festival South Africa, Ultra Music Festival South Africa and Ultra Music Festival Miami 2016.
Cara’s first single, ‘Falling’, an African influenced tropical house track produced by a Cape Town based band, The Kiffness, received a lot of local attention. This summer tune charted on many of South Africa’s top radio stations including national radio station, 5FM, where it spent 12 weeks on the Top 40 charts, 4 of which were in the Top 10, reaching #4. Cara’s second single ‘Invisible’ superseded by spending 3 months at #1 on the radio chart which makes Cara the first artist since 2009 to dominate the Top 30 chart, B.O.B and Lady Gaga held the record for 3 weeks. Cara’s third single, ‘Only High With You’ matched both singles and again topped the chart on a number of nationwide radio stations.
Cara’s latest feature is a collaboration with U.S based DJ’s SNBRN & BLU J. Cara and Neil Ormandy wrote ‘You Got Me’ for her upcoming debut album before SNBRN fell in love with it and wanted to produce it for his own release. The song is about not being able to get someone you can’t quite figure out off your mind, which is illustrated by Frew’s soaring vocals paired with atmospheric production that gets more bass-heavy when the hook hits.
Cara is signed to Sony Music Entertainment, moves between Los Angeles and South Africa and spends most of her time traveling the globe performing or in studio working on new material. She is currently writing and recording her debut album.
Cara owes much of her discipline and strength of character to the fact that she is a South African Show-jumping champion, who has competed at the World Equestrian games three times. There is definitely much more to this artist than meets the eye.
