Al Bairre is a Cape Town based, 5 piece Symphonic Indie Rock band, who combine cello, violins, guitars, ukelele’s and drums. Al Bairre launched in 2012 and drawing influence from bands such as Arcade Fire, Ra Ra Riot, Vampire Weekend and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes, their goal was to take an indie band and turn it into an “ice cream of orchestral sounds”.

Since launching at the beginning of 2012 and taking to stages across South Africa , Al Bairre , the Cape Town based five-piece classic indie pop band, who combine cello, violins, guitars, keyboard, ukelele and drums, has played numerous successful shows alongside great acts such as The Hives, Alt – J, Skunk Anansie, Boyz noise, Dear Reader, The Parlotones, John Wizards, Fokofpolisiekar, Matthew Mole and Desmond & the Tutus.

Al Bairre draw influence from bands such as Arcade Fire, The Cure, Fleetwood Mac, Vampire Weekend, Dexy’s Midnight runners and Ra ra riot, with their goal to take an indie band and turn it into an “ice cream of orchestral sounds”.

During this time, Al Bairre has released a self-recorded ‘When I Was Tall’ EP. The independent release was very well received not only locally but also internationally with tracks being playlisted by Sydney University Radio, as well as being featured on both Vodafone’s London Fashion Week recap and a commercial featuring Louis Hamilton and Jensen Button. The band has also released two music videos for the tracks ‘When I Was Tall’ and ‘Right Here In July’ and recently a third for their single ‘We Move On’ which generated over 20 000 views on Youtube within a week.

The year of 2013 saw Al Bairre complete several successful tours across the country, performing at prestigious local festivals such as, Rocking the Daisies, Oppi Koppi : Belwiderbeast, Splashy Fen, Synergy live, Flamjangled Tea Party, Utopia Fest, Hope Fest and were chosen as the only local supporting act for InTheCity JHB.

With their performance supporting The Hives, Skunk Anansie, Alt-J and Boys noize in October, a confirmed booking to perform at the MK Awards, Ramfest 2014 and Upthecreek festival 2014, as well as a new E.P featuring the soon to be released single ‘Tunnels’, 2014 looks to be another stellar year with the hopes of an international tour.

The band were recently nominated for two MK awards in the categories of ‘best new comer’ and ‘best budget video’ and were asked to open the award ceremony with a performance of ‘Tunnels’. They returned home victorious in both categories.
